The project was initiated by the German Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) and is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), with additional support from ACBA Bank

In Armenia, the project is implemented by the For People and Nature Armenian Association NGO (FPAN) and the Eco-Globe Environmental NGO.

The project combines environmental, economic, and social development measures, strengthening community resilience and creating long-term solutions for nature conservation.

Buffer zones are important transitional areas between specially protected natural areas and human settlements. Their proper management supports nature conservation while creating sustainable economic opportunities for local residents.

Sustainable Management of Land and Natural Resources

• Information and advisory activities on the sustainable management of land and natural resources
• Biodiversity assessment of the buffer zone of the Herher State Sanctuary
• Development of recommendations for the sustainable use of natural resources
• Establishment and capacity development of environmental civil society organizations
• Training on the sustainable use of natural resources
• Measures to reduce human–wildlife conflicts
• Introduction of preventive measures and practical solutions
• Implementation of tree-planting activities
• Introduction of solar energy systems, drip irrigation, and water-resource management systems

Development of Cooperatives and Small Businesses

• Training on the development and strengthening of local value chains
• Business planning training
• Development of financial management skills and financial literacy
• Advisory support on marketing and public relations
• Support for the establishment and management of cooperatives
• Implementation of demonstration initiatives for sustainable resource use
• Participation in national exhibitions and fairs

Socio-Economic Support for Women and Displaced Persons

• Information activities on new opportunities, employment, and income sources

Information Centre

The project foresees the establishment of an information centre that will serve as a permanent platform for environmental education, community meetings, public discussions, training, and the exchange of experience.

The centre will serve residents of the project communities not only during implementation but also after the project ends, supporting the continuity of local initiatives and the long-term sustainability of project results.
