In 2024, a young golden eagle was recorded in Armenia by our team. According to data transmitted by a satellite tracker, the bird exhibits typical behavior, spending most of its time near its birthplace, occasionally traveling up to 60 km before returning.
Golden eagles are known for their strong attachment to their birthplace. It is well documented that many territorial birds maintain and defend the area around their nest within a certain radius, preventing other birds of prey from approaching.
Many young golden eagles undertake short trips away from their birthplace before reaching sexual maturity, after which they choose their mate, nesting site, and settle in that area.
Interestingly, our colleagues in Kazakhstan recently placed a satellite tracker on a young golden eagle, and the results showed that the bird migrated quite far south from its nesting area, demonstrating migratory behavior.
It is worth recalling that the golden eagle was recognized as Armenia’s Bird of the Year in 2023. Within this framework, numerous research activities were conducted, and we continue these efforts today.
