Protected Nature Areas: A National Treasure

As part of the FPAN “Rural Tourism Development” Program, we highlight the significance of Armenia’s specially protected natural areas and their vital role in ecological conservation and sustainable tourism.

These areas encompass land ecosystems, surface and underground water sources, and air basins that are designated by law due to their ecological, scientific, cultural, recreational, and aesthetic value.

To preserve these unique areas, economic activities are either strictly limited or completely prohibited. The aim is to protect the flora, fauna, and overall balance of ecosystems. The main objectives of protection are:

  • To support the natural development of ecosystems and biodiversity,

  • To prevent or reduce the negative impact of human activity,

  • To identify and stop violations of environmental regulations,

  • To enforce protection policies within designated zones.

Economic activity that may threaten ecological stability, wildlife, or cultural heritage is prohibited in and around these protected zones.

Armenia’s designated protected areas include:
• National Parks
• Sanctuaries
• Nature Reserves
• Natural Monuments

Protecting nature is our shared responsibility—for the benefit of future generations.
